North American right-wing activists/journalists banned from UK under terrorism laws.
|
Been developing for a few days but the bigger papers have now done stories.
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/right-wing-canadian-activist-lauren-southern-detained-at-calais-and-barred-from-entering-uk-a3787886.html
TL;DR - They came to meet with Tommy Robinson
I specifically have known of Southern's work via some other people for while and I strongly agree with a lot of her rhetoric and stunts but being "refused on policy grounds that their presence in the UK was not conducive to the public good" is a different thing.
For me that is a pretty scary (not to mention inconsistent) stance from an open government.

Freedom of speech is highly overrated.
I don't know why all those young men threw their lives away in two world wars trying to defend it.

If she's as drab as you IOC then I hope she's detained indefinitely. Or shot.

Yes I agree IOC. It is worrying that our democratic government do these things just because someone spoke out against Islam. It's not like they are nice honorable citizens is it?
The Mayor of London has called to stop abusive comments to Muslims and published some of the abuse he gets. I replied to him that wouldn't it be better to call on Muslims to stop the causes of abuse -terrorism, grooming gangs and lack of integration first...

When drastic laws are brought in to suppress liberty and political freedom they never say they are brought in to suppress liberty and political freedom, they always say they are on the grounds of protecting people from terrorists. Opponents of this law opposed it on the grounds that it would be used in ways that weren’t expressly intended at the time, ie protecting us from terrorists. I’m not a fan of this lady, but the use of this law in this way should trouble anyone who values political pluralism.

This is a horrendous story and shames me to be British.
Forget for a moment their political beliefs.
They were coming to speak in public about defending the right to free speech. One of them was coming to interview Tommy Robinson for her online channel.
They were arrested under section 7 of the terrorism act, detained and questioned without legal rep.
Southern's father was phoned (he recorded the call) and the officer told him that although she was detained under the terrorism act, they did not suspect her of being a terrorist.
There is a lot more detail that you can find yourself, but it is a dystopian nightmare of Huxleyian proportions and I now truly fear for our future as a country and for our standing in the world.

Interesting how free speech suddenly matters to those vehemently opposed to any free speech not in accordance with their own...

I actually believe it’s very important to remember what a politician is actually going to say when making the decision on whether you let them in the country to say it.

That shows what living in a country too long behind the iron curtain does to weaken your mentality.

How interesting that there is a discussion on here regarding the implementation of section 7 of the Act because it’s use has prevented a Canadian entering The UK.
In the meantime that same Act has been used as the means of stopping and arbitrarily questioning literally tens of thousands of ordinary Muslim travellers without any of us mentioning it.
I’m glad that this woman has brought to light the existence and use of section 7 because it was one of the typical personal freedom testing moves brought in by the right leaning Blair regime. Remember when Parliament passes a law whose probable abuse has been pointed out some time down the line it will happen.
